India’s mixed-doubles pair of Sania Mirza-Rohan Bopanna made the way into the semi-finals in Rio 2016 Oltmpics after defeating Britain’s pair of Andy Murray and Heather Watson on Friday.

The Indian pair won in straight sets and were clearly the dominating one sealing a 6-4 6-4 win in the quarters. The win gives India two chances to win a medal at the Games. If India win their next match, they will be assured of atleast a silver by reaching the final.

Even if they lose, they will play a bronze medal play-off and have a chance at winning a medal.

The British pair took and early lead in the first set by breaking the Indian pair but they responded back by breaking them as well. The Indian pair broke the British one more to make it 4-3. There were no slip ups from there on and the Indian pair went on to win the set 6-4.

In the second set, it was a shaky start from the Indians but they exploited the serves of Watson and good some crucial points. Bopanna then came up with some brilliant serves to make it 5-3. Murray and Watson then put up some fight to pull one game back but it was all over as India took the tenth game.

Murray was coming into this match after a two-hour long men’s singles quarter-final match and was visibly tired while playing the mixed doubles match. He looked a shadow of himself and made unforced errors.

Watson was also off colour and was unable to produce her best net game which costed the British pair points in both the sets.

Murray is a three-time Grand Slam men’s singles champion and also the Olympic defending champion in the men’s singles. On the other hand, Watson is the current Wimbledon champion in the mixed doubles category.

Sania and Bopanna were cheered by Leander Paes, who was Bopann’s partner in the men’s doubles but crashed out of the first round.
