India’s first female gymnast to qualify for Olympics after 52 years, Dipa Karmakar has set the standards of gymnastics very high in India. Apart from called the ‘World Class Gymnast’ by the world body, she is one of the five women that have successfully landed the very difficult Produnova vault in competition, also holding the highest score amongst all (15.100 ) in her attempt.

Produnova, is one of the tougher vaults being competed in the world – a combination of generating sufficient height to complete rotation and the difficulty in finding the ground after twisting in order to control the landing.

Hailing from humble background from Tripura, Karmakar is clearly India’s best bet in gymnastics. The state is known to produce good performers in gymnastics. Vying for Gold, Dipa’s challenge won’t be easy especially on the difficult vault which has already led to a horrific injury of French gymnast Samir Ait Said.

However, Dipa, is more excited than concerned about performing the vault at the Rio Games.

“I believe that practice makes perfect, and then it is not difficult anymore,” she said. “My coach, (Bisweshwar Nandi) ensured that I practised extensively.”

“In the last three months I did 1000 repetitions of the move,” she said. “Now it is the easiest vault for me.”

Dipa, who will celebrate her 23rd birthday on Tuesday, is the first Indian gymnast after 1964 Olympics. She previously won bronze at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after landing the Produnova in her vault final.

“Not many in the country knew about this until recently, and now I hope that this vault becomes more famous than me in India,” she said.
