US Presidential Elections 2016: Hillary Clinton most searched presidential candidate on Google

Hillary Clinton took over Republican candidate Donald Trump as the most keenly searched candidate on the Internet’s most widely used search engine.

Democrat Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has picked up the lead in terms of most searched presidential candidate on the search engine Google barely hours before America votes. Hillary took over Republican candidate Donald Trump as the most keenly searched candidate on the Internet’s most widely used search engine. On November 8 midnight, the search density on Google stood equal with 48 per cent of candidate interest going for Hillary and the same for Trump. The rest was divided between other candidates Gary Johnson, Jill Stein and Evan McMullin. Hillary’s videos are also being watched around 8-10 per cent more than Trump’s on YouTube.

At 11:30 am IST, for every 66 searches for Hillary, Trump was clocking 53. Hillary led throughout the day, not dropping behind Trump at any time. Trump was leading Hillary two days ago but on Monday their popularity on Google came to equal footing and on Tuesday Hillary took off.

Overall search density charts show that people in Oceania are searching for Trump more than any demographic region, even more than America. Similarly, Africa is searching most for Hillary, more than even the US.

Interestingly, only 9 out of 50 states in the US are searching Trump more than Hillary. These states are are Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, West Virginia and Vermont. Only 12 states are searching for economy as top election issue. At least 29 are searching abortion as their top issue.


The top trending related searches for Trump in the US did not include election issues. Rather, they were regarding his alleged assassination attempt, rushing him off the stage at a rally, his Twitter handle, Reno and the secret service.


Similarly, the top trending related searches for Hillary in the US included NYPD over its stop and frisk rights, Hillary becoming the unsafe hand, Beyonce and Hillary spirit cooking.

According to latest trends data available for November 6, electoral issues clubbed with candidates found interesting trends in searches outside the US more than in the US. According to Google trends data, when analysing Hillary’s searches clubbed with electoral issues, China and Japan are searching Trans-Pacific Partnership–a trade pact that Trump wants to scrap. Oceania is searching more than any region for ISIS and abortion. The region also tops charts for interest in abortion policy of Hillary followed by the US and Europe. Black Lives Matter polls highest in the US with Hillary while Europe is most interested in her foreign policy. Americans searched most for Hillary’s economic policy, healthcare, global warming and gun control plans. US searches topped global charts for her plans on same sex marriages as well as oil.

US searched most for Trump’s policies on abortion, black lives matter, economy, healthcare, oil and refugees. Oceania led the searches for Trump’s policies on same sex marriages, Brexit, global warming, gun control, ISIS and racism. Europe was most interested in his foreign policies in line with his plans to make more alliances in Europe.

Trump was popular in searches before the first presidential debate. After the first debate, his popularity dropped. The vice presidential debate helped revive some popularity on the Internet. But after another rise and fall in the other two following debates his position weakened. Hillary gained massive ground after she received the clean chit from the FBI.

Previously, Hillary Clinton’s related searches included mostly her emails, email server, indictment, FBI probe etc. Now the searches have changed to her presidency. On the web domain, Hillary seems to be moving ahead of Trump. We can only wait to see if that translates into votes as well.
