US Presidential elections 2016: Why people are searching for how to impeach a president

Queries like "reason for impeachment, petition to impeach trump, impeach trump, recount" ranked high on the search list.

Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump pulled off one of the biggest upsets in US politics, online searches on how to impeach a president have increased multi-fold. Search traffic from residents of states that have voted for Hillary Clinton has been high. According to data from Google Trends, people from California, Vermont, Washington, Hawaii and more states that have voted for Clinton have registered a high percentage of search queries on the subject. Queries like “reason for impeachment, petition to impeach trump, impeach trump, recount” ranked high on the search list.

It reflects how deeply divided the nation was on the day outgoing President Barack Obama said the country is rooting for Donald Trump “in uniting and leading the country”. Saying he was heartened to hear Trump’s acceptance speech, Obama said the country needs a “sense of unity” and inclusion.

In the history of US politics, only two presidents have been impeached — Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. And both have retained office after being acquitted by the Senate. Hillary’s husband Bill Clinton was embroiled in a controversy after former White House intern Monica Lewinski admitted to having an “inappropriate relationship” with him.
