Ever wondered what a song from mermaids and mermen would sound like? Or does the idea of creatures singing underwater sound too fantastical to be true? Then you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Behold, listen and be prepared to be hypnotised by the melodies of Between Music, who claim to be the world’s first aquatic band. This group of uniquely talented musicians will blow your mind by doing something that is inconceivable by any stretch of imagination. They play, they sing and they perform while submerged underwater!

This video here, ‘Concurrently’, is an excerpt from their concert in which performers, encased in aquarium-like glass tanks are seen singing and playing custom-made musical instruments while remaining submerged in water. The music sounds completely ethereal, as if from another world and one is left breathless at watching these gifted musicians hold their breath and produce such mesmerising music.

According to reports, it took the group 10 years of experimentation for this rare feat to be accomplished. To achieve the unforgettable sound, the band uses various instruments, including the hydraulophone, violin, electromagnetic harp, chimes and percussion instruments, which are tweaked for underwater use. The band’s lead vocalist Laila Skovmand practised singing underwater by submerging her face in a kitchen bowl filled with water. And finally, Skovmand came up with a technique, which involves keeping an air-bubble in the mouth and singing through it, thus, allowing her to sing under water.
