The onset of the US election campaign by Republican candidate Donald Trump was marked with xenophobic comments and racial attacks in his rallies. Trump’s remarks on refugees, Muslims, immigrants and Blacks have created apprehensions – and even fear in some cases – among not just US citizens but also people around the world.

As the crucial November election approaches, US debate nights have taken over our attention from Trump’s speeches at rallies. Taking incidents from those, a powerful video has gone viral on social media that juxtaposes racial attacks and discrimination prevalent in the US in 1960s and those that have been witnessed over the past couple of moths at Trump’s rallies.

The chilling video is hard-hitting and shows brutal violence against Black people at a time when they were struggling to find acceptance in American society. What is shocking is the similarity with what has happened at the Republican candidate’s campaign rallies. Adding chilling intensity to the video is the voice-over comprising various speeches by the billionaire businessman-turned-politician suggesting that how it’s now now a better time and earlier racial discrimination were inhuman.

The images from 2016 certainly contradicts Trump’s claim.

The video is well made and there parts when Trump’s words and the image are placed in either harmony or irony.  The bone-chilling footage of “good-old days” and present-day Trump rallies along with the Republican candidate’s voice have certainly raised concern among Netizens.

The video clip is a part taken from a documentary titled the 13th directed by Ava DuVernay, who also directed the Oscar-winning Martin Luther King Jr biopic Selma. Centered on the dark side of racism in the US criminal justice system, the film is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which outlawed slavery. The film – which has several accounts and interviews of the victims of the prejudice – was filmed in secrecy and was only brought to light when it was announced as the opening film for the 2016 New York Film Festival.

The clip is only a small part of the entire film, which was posted on Twitter by national field director for the Democratic National Committee, “Absolutely devastating.” However, the selective footage has irked the film-maker and who said that the sensitive documentary is not a propaganda film for the party. DuVernay urged everyone to see the “film fully and not cherry picks”.

DuVernay’s new documentary, which will be exclusively released on Netflix, is a condemnation of the racially charged way politicians from both the parties have handled criminal justice issues throughout American history, and “cherry-picking” just one montage from the film certainly has led to a sad binary.
