This year, Google’s been all about Salman Khan’s Sultan, Donald Trump and Rio Olympics

Demonetisation, although introduced only a month back in November, was, unsurprisingly, among the top 10 Google searches this year.

As the year 2016 comes to an end, Google India has come up with a recap of everything that made the year eventful, be it the major events that set the Internet buzzing, the most googled personalities, or just the basic user interests that came up, based on the trillions of searched Indians made on the search engine all through 2016.

This year, the country which is known for its obsession with cricket, in fact, has Rio Olympics 2016 as the top trending search on Google. Indians also seemed to have been as eager as the rest of the world for the US presidential elections, as it was the second most searched news event, after Rio Olympics. With that, no prizes for guessing who was the most looked up personality on the Internet. It was US president elect Donald Trump. Following him on the list of trending personalities is PV Sindhu, who won an Olympic silver medal in badminton in Rio. The person who came third on the list is someone whose tales of betrayal and questionable loyalty had the nation proclaiming ‘Sonam Gupta bewafa hai’.

What else is going viral

A expected, demonetisation, although introduced only a month back in November, was among the top 10 searches on Google this year.

Salman Khan’s blockbuster movie Sultan was the most searched movie, followed by Rajinikanth’s Kabali and Shahid Kapoor-starrer Udta Punjab. Surprisingly, Sushant Singh Rajput and Kabir Bedi were the top searched-for Bollywood actors; and Disha Patani and Urvashi Rautela the most looked-up actresses. Actor Brad Pitt, whose divorce with Angelina Jolie is still making headlines, is the most searched actor globally.

Google has also come up with a year in search video for 2016.

Meanwhile, actress Priyanka Chopra and fashion designer Anita Dongre have made it to Google’s official list of top searches. Chopra made as much news for her upcoming Hollywood debut with Baywatch as she did for her sartorial choices at the various red carpet appearances, including that stunning Zuhair Murad dress at the Oscars.
