External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj gave a stinging speech at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN headquarters. Calling for isolation of Pakistan, the minister said “nations that still speak the language of terrorism, nurture it, peddle it and export it should have no place in the comity of nations as culpable as the very terrorists they harbour”.

She also said Pakistan should forget about Kashmir, which belongs to India and shall always be a part of the country. “Abandon this dream… Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and will always remain so,” she said, mincing no words.

To put it in context, during his address at the UNGA, Pakistan’s Prime Minister had said terrorism is a violation of human rights and the country itself is a victim of terrorism. In response, Swaraj said, “Those accusing others of human rights violations would do well to introspect and see what egregious abuses they are perpetrating in their own country, including in Balochistan. The brutality against the Baloch people represents the worst form of state oppression. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others.”

One of her statements made at the UNGA that absolutely won people’s heart back home was this. “What conditions are those from Pakistan talking about…our prime minister went to Lahore to wish Nawaz Sharif on his birthday…it was not on any condition. And what did we get in return? Pathankot, Bahadur Ali and Uri.”

Her straightforward and bold speech is being lauded on Twitter, with Netizens giving the minister as much of a standing ovation as they virtually can.

Sample these.

Garnering the adoration and admiration of Netizens is not new for Swaraj, as her tweets usually have a balance of wit, humour and seriousness, but this address at the UNGA was a class apart, and quite unforgettable. Who knows, it might just go down in history as one of the most powerful speeches made by an Indian politician at the UNGA.
