While many cities were badly hit by the Bharat Bandh called by trade unions affiliated to opposition parties on September 2, many were clearly enjoying the strike. The nation-wide strike called by central trade unions on Friday hit normal life in several states with Left-ruled Kerala and West Bengal being hardest hit. Though clashes between bandh supporters and police might have been the highlight of the strike, on social media it was humour that won the points.

Many sought to know how India becomes Bharat during strikes. One even questioned why it is not India Bandh or Hindustan Bandh. Alas, he did not get any answer.

Whether the bandh was successful or not is a different question altogether, but the fun and sarcasm on social media have been opulent. While for some it was a perfectly timed excuse of a weekend plan, others thought it was a way to just relax. People were also excited to see roads devoid of traffic jams and took to social media sites to express their happiness. Most importantly, many citizens said they could finally use the fourth and fifth gear. So, certainly one can feel their glee.
