While majority in India celebrated P V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik’s victory and equally lauded Dipa Karmakar’s performance, there were others who spewed uncalled for hate on other players. Though many expected Indians to perform better than they did in Rio Olympics this year, the amount of trolling and hate they were subjected to on social media after losing was absolutely unethical.
Abhinav Bindra, Indian professional shooter, was recently trolled on Twitter for his loss at Rio. He narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting event, coming fourth. The first Indian to win an individual gold medal in an Olympics, Bindra announced his retirement after the Rio match in a very dignified manner. He was unperturbed and unmoved by the loss.
Yet, inspite of appreciating his dedication and respect for the sport, this Twitter user decided to make fun of the legend. The user, Jasdeep tweeted — “@Abhinav_Bindra Bro why are you missing in all facilitations happening in Delhi? If Deepa is getting such a reception then why cant you?” The 33-year-old Olympian gave a stern, yet dignified reply to him, saying — “@jasdeep204, she is a path breaker in gymnastics and I’m happy that she is getting much deserved attention. I had my moment in 2008”.
Yes, Bindra got appreciated for making the country proud at the Olympics 2008 in Beijing when he won a gold medal and was the first to do so in an individual event.
Though, he decided to end the discussion with his mature reply, people on Twitter appreciated the true sportsmanship he showcased in his reply to Jasdeep.
That’s the brief conversation Jasdeep had with the man.

By the way, when Jasdeep said facilitations, he meant felicitations. Poor guy forgot the spelling in a rush to troll one of the greatest living legends of Indian sports.
