Watch: This video brings out the stark reality of rags vs riches discrimination

People's reaction to different avatars of the same child-actor — one privileged and the other underprivileged — will leave your surprised.

UNICEF’s latest video on the treatment of children explores the dichotomy in the way the world treats homeless children on the streets as opposed to more fortunate children. In the video, Anano — a child actor — is made to play the roles of both a homeless child and a privileged one. The reactions of people to her different avatars are eye-opening and show our ingrained sense of discrimination against underprivileged children.

Watch the video here.

As Anano stood on the streets of Tbilisi, Georgia, in her pink coat, her straight hair perfectly combed, the passers by flock to her and coo over her, with some even expressing the concern if she was lost and needed help. Anano’s appearance was then changed to make her look like an underprivileged child. As poor Anano waited on the same sidewalk, people just walked past her without a second glance.

The setting was then changed to a high-end restaurant. Once again, a well-groomed little Anano was fussed over by the indulgent customers. When she walked back in in her tattered avatar, people started shunning her away, even asking the restaurant staff to take her away. Anano ran out of the restaurant crying.

“..Because my face was covered in soot and my clothes were all dirty, this made me sad,” said Anano after the experiment. “They were all telling me to go away.” 6-year-old Anano was so upset by the experience that the experiment had to be called off.

The video is a part of UNICEF’s #fightunfair campaign which is a “call to action for the world to treat its least fortunate children the way it treats its luckier children”. UNICEF’s 2016 State of the World’s Children Report sheds light on the condition of millions of children living in poverty, who are ignored, pushed aside and deprived of everything they need to thrive.
