When a Twitter troll decided to criticise 2015 Wimbledon women’s singles winner Serena Williams for looking like “a man”, Harry Potter author JK Rowling slammed him.
Twitter user @diegtristan8 tweeted after Serena’s victory “she is built like a man.” Rowling then tweeted out to the user with a picture of Serena looking stunning in a red dress with the words, “Yeah, my husband looks just like this in a dress. You’re an idiot.”

JK Rowling’s tweet has been retweeted over 61,000 times and has been favourited over 70,000 times on the site and it’s still going viral.
In January, Rowling had earlier taken down media baron Rupert Murdoch who had tweeted after the Charlie Hebdo killings, “Maybe most Moslems peaceful, but until they recognize and destroy their growing jihadist cancer they must be held responsible.”
She had replied, “I was born a Christian. If that makes Rupert Murdoch my responsibility, I’ll auto-excommunicate.” She had also added on a reply to Murdoch’s tweet, “The Spanish Inquisition was my fault, as is all Christian fundamentalist violence. Oh, and Jim Bakker.”
While Rowling’s taken down of the Serena-hater is right, this is also not the first time that a women’s tennis player has faced such kind of negative comments. In 2013, when French woman Marion Bartoli won Wimbledon, BBC Radio presenter John Inverdale thought it was relevant to comment on her looks. He had said, “Bartoli’s dad told her when she was little, ‘You’re never going to be a looker, you’ll never be a Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight’?”
And he was not the only one who commented on her looks. As this tweet from @EverydaySexism shows, Bartoli was called a lot of terrible names on the social media site, with ugly and fat being the least offensive ones.
In Serena’s case, her greatness as a tennis player is evident. She has won 21 singles Grand Slam titles and is the only player in the history of the sport to win all four Grand Slams at least once after having turned 30. That’s something no male tennis player has done.
But, of course Twitter trolls will just judge a woman tennis player based on their warped perception of beauty. Thankfully Rowling decided to call one out and shut him down.
