Tesla, the American electric car maker, is set to make its debut in India this summer. In reply to a Tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the company is hoping to launch in India this summer. Twitter user who goes by the handle ‏@goel_ishan posted a tweet which says, “@elonmusk eagerly waiting for Tesla to launch in India. Any plans to do it? If so then WHEN?” Musk replied by saying, “@goel_ishan Hoping for summer this year.”

Tesla, last year, announced its plans to start shipping cars that are fully capable of self-driving. It had opened booking for Indian buyers too and got a decent response from people who dished out $1000 for the same.

In April, Elon Musk had said Tesla has added more countries including India, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Ireland to the Tesla Model 3 order page. The vehicle will go into production in late 2017 and is expected to cost around $35,000 before tax breaks.

In 2015, the Tesla factory was among the places visited by PM Narendra Modi as part of his trip to the Silicon Valley. While Modi invited the company to set shop in India, especially since the country is clearly among the most suitable for the technology.

The Indian delegation also had its eyes on the Tesla Powerwall and how this solar battery could help us tap into the one resource we have in abundance. The Tesla Powerwall could help Indian households become self-sufficient in their energy needs.

Last July, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had offered Tesla land near major Indian ports to make the country its Asia manufacturing hub and facilitate exports to South and South East Asian countries. He had offered the invitation while visting the Tesla factory near San Francisco and offered to promote joint ventures between the firm and Indian automobile companies with a view to introducing pollution-free road transport in India, especially commercial and public motor vehicles, an official statement had said.
