Google Station is a new project announced by the search giant for India, which aims to bring high-speed Internet to WiFi hotspots in the country. Google has been working on free public WiFi at Railway Stations in India in partnership with RailTel, and has so far connected over 52 stations. Google Station is inspired by that idea, but it is a new internet access platform for boosting public WiFi hotspots in India.

Google plans to work with partners to help create public WiFi hotspots across India. This concept of high-speed public WiFi could soon come to malls, cafes, university campuses, etc if Google gets it right.

Google Station will help partners in rolling out WiFi hotspots in public places as well as maintain and monetise these hotspots in partnership with Google Fiber. According to Google, it will provide partners with system integrators (SIs), and venues in order to setup WiFi spots.

Google says it will provide “software and guidance on hardware to turn fiber connections into fast, reliable and safe WiFi zones.”  Google will start looking for partners to work for the Station project.

With Google Station, the company is taking the idea of public WiFi to the next level in India. In case of the Google WiFi at Railway stations, the company partnered with RailTel to create public WiFi zones. Railtel owns the Pan-India optic fiber network exclusively on railway tracks (over 45,000 kms ) and it is this optic fiber network Google uses for its WiFi. Google provides the Wireless Area Networks (WAN) at the platforms.

With Google Station, the company will be bringing its expertise and learning to other public WiFi hotspots in India, and thus improve the overall experience.

Google Station is not the only means of Internet connectivity, the search giant is exploring for India. The company has been testing Project Loon in India as well. In April, Indian Express had reported that the Central government asked Google India to submit a revised proposal with a new frequency band for Project Loon in India. Google wanted to conduct a pilot test in the 700-900 MHz frequency band earlier, but it was asked to changed this. Project Loon aims to bring free internet to places with minimal or poor connectivity via Google’s Internet connected balloons.
