Samsung is planning to revamp the flagship Galaxy S8 smartphone after the disastrous Note 7 recall, and could delay the launch of the phone to April, says a report in Wall Street Journal. The Galaxy S6, S7 smartphones were launched at the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC), which usually takes place around February. According to a Wall Street Journal report, which quoted people familiar with the matter, Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 could come with a dedicated button for the new upcoming AI-based personal assistant.

The report in WSJ indicates Samsung is looking at a “hardware revamp” and prototypes of the new phone have a button on the side edge which will used to launch this virtual assistant. However, none of this has been finalised, points out the report.

For Samsung, there will be a lot riding on the next flagship product, especially in light of the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, which has raised questions about the brand’s overall image and reliability. Samsung America recently took out full page ads in the US print media to apologise over the Note 7 issue.

This weeks has seen several reports about Samsung’s plans for a virtual assistant in the next flagship device. Samsung recently acquired Viv Labs, which was co-founded by the same team that built Siri.

Korean media quoted Samsung Vice President Rhee In-jong as saying, “The current Galaxy smartphones need separate applications for users, for instance, to order pizza or coffee. But, the new AI platform will enable them to order (or do) things directly without going through separate applications.”

According to Samsung’s VP, developers will be able to attach and upload services to their personal assistant, which will get smarter over time and learn more services. It will also power Samsung’s IoT devices like smart refrigerators, televisions etc, and allows users to connect their phone with other home appliances as well.

Samsung acquired Viv in October, which has sparked interest on how the company plans to use this in the future. Viv is an open artificial intelligence (AI) platform where third-party app developers can also build conversational assistants.

With Samsung planning to go big with its own AI platform, we’ll have to wait and see how the company implements it in the next Galaxy flagship.
