Apple is expected to bring wireless charging for the first time with its iPhone 8 smartphone in 2017, according to trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (KGI Securities). According to Kuo, iPhone 8 users will be able to charge the phone’s battery using a wireless charging system similar to the one on Apple Watches, but Apple-being-Apple might not be shipping the wireless charger with the box – and might be charging separately for it.
Apple’s biggest competitor, Samsung has had wireless charging for the longest time; but the Cupertino giant has up until now refrained from inducting the technology into their phones. Kuo says that even while Android devices (with plastic and metal backs) from a range of different manufacturers feature wireless charging, the expected glass body of the iPhone 8 will help achieve faster speeds in wireless charging with ‘minimum disruption from frequency interference’. Kuo’s report is in line with an earlier report by BGR that also claimed that the 2017 iPhones will be getting wireless charging. Apple is expected to become more aggressive in adoption of wireless charging through 2018.
An earlier report by Kuo has hinted at Apple planning to launch a bezel-less OLED iphone 8, along with the revisions of the two standard 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays next year. All three phones are expected to come with glass casings and incorporate wireless charging.
Kuo has said that the larger 5.5-inch ‘Plus’ model will no more be the high-end flagship, with the OLED iPhone expected to be technically superior to the other two phones. He has also said that the optical image stabilisation (OIS) will be coming to both the wide-angle and telephoto lens next year.
