According to the Q3 2016 report by International Data Corporation (IDC), tablet shipments in India ( that is inclusive of slate and detachables) stood at 1.06 million, remaining stagnant over the same period last year. The total tablet shipments however grew by 7.8 per cent in Q3 2016 over Q2 2016 catering to the festive season.
“Commercial segment continues to grow at a healthy pace accounting to over one-fifth of total tablet shipments in CY Q3 2016 with key contributors being Education, Government and large Enterprise segments. Commercial segment also contributed to majority of detachable shipments in Q3 2016 driving the product category’s volume to almost double over previous quarter,” said Karthik J, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India.
4G tablet shipments in India saw a steady uptake, up by 55 per cent in Q3 2016 over the previous quarter. According to Karthik, 4G tablets account for one-fourth of the total tablets shopped during the period – with Samsung dominating the 4G tablet list thanks to the launch of its new J max tablet.
The top vendor of tablets in India during the quarter is Datawind, with a 26.1 per cent market share during the period. Samsung came second with a 17.3 per cent market share (a 26.2 per cent growth over Q2), followed by iBall, Lenovo and Micromax with 13.6 per cent, 12 per cent and 10.1 per cent respectively.
Interestingly Apple did not make the cut to be among the top five tablet vendors in India, even while it was able to capture a major chunk of the shrinking global tablet market, with 43 million units shipped during Q3 of 2016. Globally, Samsung was able to hold the number two position in tablet shipments.
