Apple has finally updated its smartwatch offering simply called ‘Apple Watch’. The second generation smartwatch is called ‘Apple Watch Series 2’ and features a new GPU, which gives it twice the performance in comparison with the first Apple Watch. The watch is also the first to ship with Apple’s latest watchOS 3.
Apple Watch Series 2 looks exactly like the first generation watch, but has some cool new features tucked inside. It has a thinner display which features 1000nits of brightness making for a better readability under direct sunlight. The addition of GPS in the watch, makes for a more capable running companion.
Apple Watch Series 2, like the original Apple Watch, has a stronger focus on fitness tracking, and with its new waterproof design – it can be used for surfing, swimming or any other water activity up to 50m. Apple Watch 2 reviews have started pouring in internationally and most reviewers find the device as a worthy upgrade. But is this the best smartwatch? Here is what the early reviews have to say
According to Lauren Goode from Verge, “The Apple Watch 2 is what the first Apple Watch should have been.” Goode says that the new watch feels like a legitimate fitness tracker and something that can be a useful platform to access apps. The watch focuses a lot on fitness, and does a fair job of fitness tracking. She finds that Apple has developed on the fact that people primarily used the first generation watch for fitness-tracking purposes.

Goode also finds the new OS to be wrist friendly. In her review, she notes that the new Apple watch has done away with the pretension to replace smartwatches and has a greater focus on fitness. She finds that there is still room for improvement, like sometimes the watch does not wake up when she twists her wrist. Even with the new bright display, she found it difficult to read it under direct sunlight.
Lance Ulanoff of Mashable has found that ‘life is pretty good with the new Apple Watch Series 2’. According to him, the new SiP makes for a faster and more responsive than the first Apple watch, making for quickly loading apps. He also liked the fact that the inbuilt GPS allows him to leave his phone behind when he goes out for a walk.
Scott Stein from CNET, gave the watch a four out of five star rating. He noted that the watch is faster and has a far better OS, but it still has the same battery life as the previous generation phone. The GPS puts a greater strain on the battery life. He was also bugged by the fact that the watch lacks an always-on display.
The Wall Street Journal thinks that the Apple Watch Series 2 is not something that you need, but a wearable you would want.
Apple Watch Series 2 will be coming with three types of cases – Stainless steel, Ceramic and Aluminium. The ceramic version will be four times harder the stainless steel according to Apple, and will be priced at $1,249. The aluminium watch is priced at $369 and the Stainless Steel is priced at $549.
