Virat Kohli loses cool after mix-ups with Cheteshwar Pujara, watch video

Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara's 226-run stand was off to a shaky start as the two were involved in two mix-ups in one over.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli stabilised the Indian innings with a fantastic 3rd wicket partnership of 226 runs on Day 1 of the second Test between India and England. The duo didn’t start on a solid note and there were some nervous moments at the start of their partnership.

Running between the wickets was a matter of concern as not once, twice but thrice they had mix-ups which could have been dangerous. The first instance was in the 17th over when Virat Kohli tried to take a single off Adil Rashid. Kohli sped down to the other side but Pujara wasn’t that quick and was saved by a slow throw from Joe Root. He made the dive and just about got there even as Jonny Bairstow took the bails off. The decision went upstairs and the third umpire declared not out.

But the trouble didn’t end there. Just two balls later, Kohli pushed one to the onside and took an easy single. The second was on and Pujara had already run halfway across the pitch when Kohli screamed for him to go back. Pujara turned around, lost his bat in the process, ran a few steps and made a desperate dive and in the end, got back into the crease before the throw reached Bairstow. “Have these two ever batted together?” exclaimed the commentator at that point.

The two had a conversation in the middle which again symbolised the contradicting personalities of Pujara and his captain. Kohli was animated, Pujara said a few quiet words back, the two punched their gloves and went back to their ends of the pitch. The next instance came in the 25th over. This one wasn’t one that was as threatening as the other two but Pujara would have found himself in trouble had it been a direct throw as he made his way back after Kohli refused him a single. “It looks as if the calling from Kohli is in Punjabi and the reply from Pujara is in Gujarat,” said Ravi Shastri from the commentary box.
