Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara saved India from a sticky situation on Day 1 of the second of the five match Test series between India and New Zealand in Visakhapatnam. The hosts lost both their openers before the end of the fifth over when Kohli joined Pujara in the middle. The two then put up 70 runs on the third wicket at the end of the first session.

They continued their resilient knocks into the second session, thereby turning the game India’s way. An intrusion on the field by a dog made sure that Stuart Broad’s last over prematurely ended and tea was announced with Pujara at 97 and Kohli on 91. The dog was escorted off the field before play resumed and Pujara, in the third over of the session, pulled one over deep midwicket to bring up his 10th Test century.

INDIA VS ENGLAND LIVE SCORE

Kolhi was less flamboyant and only pushed the ball to the onside to take a single and calmly raise his bat as he scored his 14th career Test century and his third in the year. Both of his previous centuries were converted into double hundreds and his calm celebration showed that he intends to do the same with this one.

Pujara was dismissed three overs later when he got a thick outside edge off a James Anderson and was caught out by Jonny Bairstow. India were only two runs short off the 250-run mark and Pujara had made 119 runs. He put up 226 runs for the third wicket with his skipper. Kohli himself is still batting with Ajinkya Rahane. It remains to be seen whether the two can do a repeat of what they did to New Zealand at Indore.

Pujara and Kohli’s partenrship steadied the boat for India and here are a few reactions to their individual knocks and the fine partnership:
