The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya died in Kolkata on Sunday evening following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 75. He’s survived by his wife Chadralekha, daughter Vaishali and son Abhishek.
Dalmiya was admitted to the BM Birla Heart Research Centre on Thursday evening after he complained of breathlessness and severe chest pain. For the last couple of days, however, his condition was said to be stable. But it started to worsen this morning and around 8.45pm he breathed his last.
“Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya became unstable this morning. The angioplasty was successful with stabilisation of his cardiac condition. However, in the late evening, Mr Dalmiya suffered a massive gastro intestinal bleeding and in spite of all the efforts of doctors he succumbed to the bleeding at 8.45 pm. Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” said the hospital statement.

Sachin Tendulkar paid his last respects in a series of tweets. “Heartfelt condolences to the family & friends of Jagmohan Dalmiya. Had met him in June. little did I realise that it would be the last. Will always cherish his encouragement & support over the years. Worked hard for the game of cricket & excelled as an administrator. Was touched by his efforts to make my penultimate Test at Eden Gardens very special. RIP Jagmohan Dalmiya.”
“Heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya,” President Pranab Mukherjee wrote on his official Twitter account.
“My thoughts are with the family of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya in this hour of grief. May Shri Dalmiya’s soul rest in peace,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The BCCI condoled his death with secretary Anurag Thakur describing Dalmiya as the “father figure” of Indian cricket. “On behalf of all the members of BCCI, I wish to submit our condolences to the bereaved family of Mr Dalmiya. As a visionary and a father figure of Indian cricket, Mr Dalmiya worked towards the development of the game of cricket in India. The cricketing fraternity will miss him dearly.
“Mr Dalmiya played a significant part in positioning Indian cricket at the global level and the astute administrator in him, guided Indian cricket to greater heights. His untiring efforts will be remembered for generations to come and his contribution to Indian cricket will remain unparalleled,” said Thakur.
Chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee described Dalmiya as a “giant” among sports administrators. “Sad. Jagmohan Dalmiya ji passes away. He was a giant amongst sports administrators, a true lover of Bengal. On my way to pay my respect. RIP,” she tweeted.
“Dalmiya Ji’s contribution 2 Indian cricket was immense. He was an astute administrator& a visionary. His demise is a huge loss 2 Indian cricket,” tweeted VVS Laxman.
A message from ICC said, “The ICC extends its deepest condolences upon the passing away of BCCI President and former ICC President Jagmohan Dalmiya.”
Dalmiya’s family was informed about the deterioration of his health this morning. By mid-evening the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) officials started to arrive. Around 11.45pm Dalmiya’s body will be taken to the CAB at 12 noon tomorrow and from there to the crematorium.
