West Indies’ opener Kraigg Brathwaite has conceded that his side has been placed at the backfoot and will need to work extra hard to save the third Test against India here, after the visitors have taken an overall lead of 285 runs on day four.

This was after Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 5 for 33 to rout West Indies’ first innings after lunch and bowl out the hosts for 225 runs. “We think Kumar bowled well with the new ball. When he took that new ball it was the key because he took four quick wickets,” Brathwaite said after the day’s play.

“India has a very good lead, but tomorrow as batsmen we have got to come and work hard and build partnerships,” he added.

India attacked in the last session of play thereafter, finishing the day at 157/3, setting themselves for a declaration early on fifth day. Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma put on 85 runs quickly, even as the hosts deployed two spinners. “It was not surprising because we were a couple of minutes behind on the over rate. That was one of the reasons. Unfortunately, we went for too many boundaries but still I think we have a job to do as a team tomorrow,” said Brathwaite.

“We have to see what they do tomorrow in terms of declaration. We think the pitch is still a good one and in terms of the time the key is to assess it as a batting group and decide whether to go for the win or the draw. We will see when the declaration comes, what we will go for,” he signed off.
