Work on PM Narendra Modi’s election promise of “sabka saath, sabka vikas (all together, development for all)” can continue amid venomous speeches of his ministers, Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla said Thursday.

“Sab ka saath, sab ka vikas and venomous speeches can go hand in hand. They are doing their work, I am doing mine; whoever is doing it more sincerely will triumph,” said Heptulla.

She was making the point that the sole mandate of her ministry is the development of minorities, which will not be impacted by what HRD Minister Of State Ramshankar Katheria said in Agra earlier this week.

When asked specifically about Katheria’s comments, Heptulla said that nothing anyone said mattered to her except when it came from the PM.

“I go by what my Prime Minister says not by what anybody else says, not by what my colleagues say. All ministers are under him; he is watching, that is what I know. My charge is development that is what I am doing. The matter of police action is not under my ministry but with the ministry of home affairs,” she said.

Reacting on the recent comments of an IAS officer in the ministry about how he could not sleep at night and appealed to the MoS for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to “allow” people to sleep peacefully, Heptulla said the officer spoke out for personal reasons.

“The officer is going through some personal problems. His wife has cancer, his children are depressed. His seniors are looking into the matter,” she said.
