Statements coming from the Congress camp after Indian Army carried out surgical strikes show their clear intention to play down the successful counter-terrorism operation that got the nod from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for political gains.
While party members like Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi lauded the operations, other party members like P Chidambaram and Sanjay Nirupam among others have tried have been asking for proof of the operation or even going to the extent of terming them as fake. In times of adversity, when the country and its political fraternity need to stand together as a singular front, such conduct comes out as an insult to the armed forces and the country.
Chidambaram, who has served as Union Minister for Finance as well as Home Minister, even released three dates when Indian armed forces carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan under the UPA rule. Interestingly, the Congress is neither in a position to give evidence nor showed any intention to provide evidence for the claims. In this case, the party has indirectly persisted with attempts to ask for proof under the garb of getting the government to call Pakistan’s bluff.
Furthermore, if they are also believed to be true, then the paramount question is why reveal dates of operations carried out in 2011 and 2013 now? The current government’s need to come out with the operations was sine qua non. The government needed to send a message that India will not sit quietly and strike back if Pakistan or any Pakistani terrorists attempt to strike at India’s integrity. Limited war is the option in such times but when the opponent seeks diplomatic sympathy as the victim, it is imperative that we expose their sins.
The Aam Aadmi Party and the CPI (M) also joined the bandwagon of doubters and it seems strange why the Army should be forced to reveal the video evidence of it strategic operations. No video proof of any operation till date have been demanded by any opposition. So why now?
Indeed, it is not the first time that Indian forces would have carried out such strikes to counter terrorist threats and these will also not be the last. What is notable is that it is the first time that an Indian government has come out in admission of carrying out such attacks. It is also notable that when the US carried out similar strikes in Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden, it came out admitting the same. The Indian government or any other government did not act as doubters.
Mistrust on the words of Indian Army is a first for senior politicians in New Delhi. The intention is clear for all to see and the prime minister, who has acted in the best interest of all Indians, is under no obligation to prove his position to anyone, least of all politicians who are only interested in extracting political brownie points. The Assembly elections are due in crucial states in 2017 and the parties are resorting to any measure to pull the other down, even at the cost of undermining national pride.
