Malicious intent
Apropos ‘Black money SIT asks for Lalit Modi case details, first voice of dissent heard in BJP’ (IE, June 24). Referring to a tweet issued by Lalit Modi in which the name of the secretary to the president is mentioned, it’s unfortunate that your newspaper has published Lalit Modi’s baseless, tendentious and malicious allegations. Publication of such allegations is tantamount to character assassination through innuendo.
Venu Rajamony,
Press Secretary to the president

US, Don’t Preach
Apropos the editorial ‘Gaping wounds’ (IE, June 24), frequent racial attacks have scarred right-thinking Americans and shocked the world. But there are vested interests who don’t allow strict gun control. Alleged shooter Dylann Roof indulged in a racial diatribe about blacks, Jews, Asians. The US should stop preaching to others and focus on its home ground to root out racism.

Boycott China
China’s direct support to Pakistan at the UN, to save Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, is shocking. It’s also shocking to note that China claims to want business relations with India. Indians must boycott all goods and services “Made in China”. Pakistan has been the home of global terror for decades. The international community must act sternly against Pakistan, administering sanctions
if need be.

Voting imposition
This refers to ‘Gujarat to notify compulsory vote law, 50% women candidates’ (IE, June 24). The move to make it compulsory for citizens to vote in local body elections could be ultra vires. It would encroach on the rights to liberty and also violate Article 21. How can
a candidate be imposed? There should be constitutional provisions prescribing prior recommendation of their candidature by at least 10 per cent of voter residents of the concerned area.
