Our American genes

Why Trump versus Hillary raises taalis and gaalis globally.

Donald Trump. Shiver in your blue suede shoes because Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has endorsed Hillary Clinton for US President. Posting a (strangely dated picture of Hillary, her hair practically oiled like Swami in Swami and Friends), Salman intones, “Hope you win. May God give you the strength to follow the constitution and human values.” He then adds, for anyone still in doubt, “#HillaryClintonforpresident.”

Bajrangi Bhaijaan is weighing in on the US polls. Well, why not? Pretty much every celebrity on earth has voiced her view on America’s election, with fervour. British actor Emma Watson has remarked on how “excruciating” it is for her to sit on the sidelines and watch the great American slap-fest, sorry, the US election, and not be able to vote. Emma implores her American sistahs to “swing it”. Another voice the sistahs might note is apni desi Priyanka Chopra who has, while stylishly breaking glass ceilings and doors on the American TV show Quantico, also remarked that Trump trying to ban people is kinda primitive, y’know. But Trump’s supporters needn’t weep in their sleep — global hearts beat for “The Donald” too. His most famous international fan is Vladimir Putin, whose strong, silent support has been given rich verbiage by British ultra-right leader Nigel Farage, by that Aussie phantom of the internet, Julian Assange, and by Slovenian academic Slavoj Zizek, who says he’d vote for Trump as Hillary is apparently “the real danger”.

But why does everyone in the world care about an American election anyway? The answer is in our genes, sorry, jeans, and all those wonderful American artefacts, from pop music to soap operas, sneakers to slang, burgers to mash-ups, Mark Twain to Malcolm X and Hollywood to Netflix, that turned all of us into Yankee doodles. We might not all be born in the USA but hey, we can all drawl like dudes and endorse whoever because we really are all-American now.
