As the Diwali week is fast approaching, London mayor Sadiq Khan joined people across religions to officially launch the annual five-day “festival of lights” at Trafalgar Square on Sunday, emphasising the essential message of how light triumphed over darkness.

“Diwali is a time where Londoners of Hindu faith, Londoners of Sikh faith, Londoners of Jain faith celebrate the festival of light. Those teachings are how light triumphs over darkness, how good triumphs over evil and how knowledge triumphs over ignorance and it is wonderful to see here in Trafalgar Square, tens and thousands of Londoners celebrating the festival of light,” Khan said during the festival opening.

The much-famous square saw a huge gathering with dancers, singers and live entertainment throughout the day. The Labour Party member, in his speech, also insisted that the London city is open to all people and all communities.
Diwali is celebrated mainly in India by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains between mid-October and mid-November. The ancient festival marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
