Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian on Monday claimed his Twitter account was hacked after two tweets linking to an escort service were sent out from his verified handle. “My twitter account was hacked. My profuse apologies for the nuisance/offensive tweets that were sent out as a result,” Subramanian tweeted a little after 5 pm Monday evening.

The two tweets, which were later deleted, included an image of a woman with the text “meet by choice not by chance” with a link out presumably to a website hosting an escort service.

Subramanian, who is active on Twitter, last tweeted on October 4. He has around 42,000 followers on the micro-blogging site and follows 45 accounts. Subramanian took charge as CEA in October 2014 succeeding Raghuram Rajan who went on to become RBI Governor.

The post of CEA was lying vacant for about a year as Rajan demitted office in 2013.
