Suzuki Q1 income up 7-fold on Maruti sales

Japanese small car giant Suzuki Motor Corporation today reported an over-seven fold jump in net income to 15.16 billion yen (about Rs 814 crore) for the quarter ended June 30,driven by robust domestic sales and a strong showing by Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki. SMC had reported a net income of 2.14 billion yen (about Rs 115 crore) in the corresponding quarter last year,the company said in a statement.

Net sales during the April-June period increased by 13.71 per cent to 656.28 billion yen (about Rs 35,240 crore) from 577.14 billion yen (about Rs 30,995 crore) in the year-ago period. “Consolidated net sales of this first quarter increased… because of the increased sales of automobiles in Japan and the increased sales of motorcycles and automobiles in Asia,” the company said.

SMC said that sales in Japan during the April-June,2010,quarter were higher than in the same period of the previous fiscal on the back of robust sales of the new ‘Alto’ and its ‘Pallete’ model.
