The legendary notes of five Sangeet Natak Akademi fellows were celebrated at a felicitation ceremony by Kerala-based cultural organisation Swaralaya at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts on Wednesday.

Felicitations were endowed upon eminent practitioners of performing arts — mridangist Umayalpuram K Sivaraman,Carnatic classical violinist M Chandrasekaran, santoor player Shivkumar Sharma,Kathakali exponent Kalamandalam Gopi, and classical Manipuri dancer and choreographer RK Singhajit Singh.

Organised in association with Jansanskriti,Delhi Malayalee Association and Kerala Club, the event presided by TKA Nair,Advisor to the President, had Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs,Vayalar Ravi,as its chief guest.

“Since its inception,Swaralaya has been promoting music and allied arts. The states have also been doing their bit to promote art and culture. Yet,at times,we feel that though there have been many opportunities to promote talent, more opportunities are required,” said Nair. Ravi added,“This is an occasion we are proud of. These are masters in their fields. I believe that time has come to open more opportunities like this.”

It was the artistes, however, who were in the spotlight and most ecstatic. “I am honoured to be here and to be felicitated in this manner because this is going to be a harbinger for many more such recognitions to come,” said Sivaraman, who won the Padma Vibhushan in 2010.
