In yet another setback to the Maoist party chief Prachanda, his son Prakash Dahal was suspended from the state council of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M) on Tuesday after he was suspected of having married a party comrade.
Dahal,31,has been missing for the past five days and local media reports have suggested that he eloped with Bina Thapa Magar,a national-level leader of the student union affiliated to the UCPN-M.
If true, this would be Prakashs third marriage. Prakash, who is still married to his second wife, has a one-year-old son. Magar is also allegedly married. The duo was part of a nine-member team from the revolutionary youths and students group which scaled Mt. Everest successfully in May. Rumours about their relationship started doing the rounds after both of them returned from the expedition.
We have suspended him from the membership of the New State Council of the party pending a full investigation, UCPN-M spokesperson Dinanath Sharma said.
The news could not have come at a worse time for Prachanda when his political clout has remarkably weakened following a split in the party in June and speculation that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, who is also the vice-chairman of the UCPN-M,has taken on a more assertive role in the organisational set-up of the party.
