In a startling editorial comment in its mouthpiece Dawat (dated September 22),Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has lauded K S Sudarshan, former Sarsanghachalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and deeply mourned his demise.

In its prominently displayed editorial — Khabr-o-nazar — on the front page, the newspaper says: “We are not sure how much the RSS is mourning his death, but the Muslims of Bhopal’s Taj-ul-Masjid,where Sudarshan wanted to come this Eid and read namaaz, are sad.” Taking note of the fact that Sudarshan wanted to visit this mosque,“but was prevented by his staff and local police who used traffic as an excuse”,Dawat writes that “former chief minister Babulal Gaur took him to a Muslim friend’s home instead”.

This, observes the paper, reveals that there “was something in his subconscious” while “he never said it; this was a message to the RSS”.

The editorial goes on to add that he was known to have spoken his mind on several occasions, deviating from the RSS’s official line. He “spoke against the BJP leadership and described Indira Gandhi as the nation’s strongest prime minister”,it says, adding that Sudarshan’s desire to be at a mosque on Eid was dismissed by the “English and Hindi newspapers as an elderly suffering from memory loss, but in reality it indicated his change of heart towards Islam”.

Dawat says that a Muslim scholar had sent him books on Islam, and Sudarshan was “undoubtedly influenced by Islam’s ability to draw people towards its ideas”. It says that in his last days, after “giving up charge of the RSS”,he may have focused on “life and creation” and “thought more about Islam as he became more reflective” and it’s possible that he was “beginning to review his opinion regarding Islam.”
