…Her police had asked those who got email: ‘Did cartoon disturb you?’

The police reportedly asked the 62 people to whom the email was forwarded

About two months after Jadavpur University (JU) Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra was arrested over a cartoon that allegedly defamed CM Mamata Banerjee, the police reportedly asked the 62 people to whom the email was forwarded if the cartoon had “disturbed” them.

The police action,an apparent effort to build a case against Mahapatra, came after the State Human Rights Commission,in May-end,asked Kolkata Police Commissioner R K Pachnanda to appear before it.

In the first week of June, the police started calling up the 62 members of the New Garia Housing Society to whom the email with the cartoon had been forwarded.

“I got a call from a police officer who said he was from East Jadavpur police station. He asked me if I was disturbed by the cartoon. He also sought my opinion on Mahapatra. I told them it was meant to be a joke,” said Kunal Ray,a scientist at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology,JU.

“I got a call from the police asking the same questions. I was told it was a part of the inquiry. I told them the cartoon did not mean any offence,” said Gauri Shankar Roy Choudhury, another resident, adding that most of his friends had also been questioned.
