The Gujarat government has decided to modify the entire master plan of the 500 square kilometre Mandal-Behcharaji Special Investment Region (SIR) to accommodate specific demands of the countrys largest car manufacturer,Maruti Suzuki India (MSI),that is setting up a manufacturing plant here.
This decision has been conveyed to MSI on Saturday when Osamu Suzuki, chairman and chief executive,Suzuki Motor Corporation visited the 640-acre site at Hansalpur village, located 110 kilometres from Ahmedabad.
For setting up a plant of this size a lot of infrastructure facilities are required. In the meeting held on Friday,MSI had indicated their requirements in terms of road and rail connectivity, availability of power, gas, etc. We presented our action plan on how the government would meet them in the next 2-3 years. They were satisfied with the response. All the connectivity issues should be in place in next 2-3 years, said Kamal Dayani,Gujarat Industries Commissioner.
During the visit Suzuki examined detailed maps of the plant site where the countrys largest car manufacturer plans to pump in Rs 4,000 crore in the first Phase-I of the project, which is its biggest investment outside Haryana.
The plant is expected to be commissioned by 2015 and will have a annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh cars. It is located 300 kms from Mundra port where Maruti has a terminal for exporting cars.
