FM office sweep: BJP says make letter to PM public

BJP general secretary and chief spokesman Ravishankar Prasad demanded that the letter written by Finance Minster Pranab Mukherjee.

BJP general secretary and chief spokesman Ravishankar Prasad on Sunday demanded that the letter written by Finance Minster Pranab Mukherjee to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about his room being ‘bugged’ be made public. He said the comment by Home Minister P Chidambaram that it was not a big issue was the “biggest comedy of independent India”.

Prasad said Manmohan Singh’s government was drifting apart. “The left hand does not know what the right is doing. The PM is acting like the CEO of a private company working for its owners,” he said. Prasad said the office of the Finance Minister was bugged, yet he did not trust the Home Minister or the Intelligence Bureau. “Rather he wrote to the PM. After 10 months when the letter was leaked, the home minster says he did not know an inquiry was conducted,” he added.

Commenting on the Lokpal Bill,Prasad said the government was not clear on its provisions. “The BJP is in favour of an effective Lokpal law. But we need to have a base document to study the provisions. An all-party meeting has been called on July 3. We hope the government will have a clear tentative view by then,” said Prasad.

He said the Congress was in the habit of blaming everything on the RSS and this was happening now with Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev. Stating that “when the Congress says it will act against corruption,it is a joke”,Prasad pointed to the 2G scam and the Commonwealth Games scam.

He said inflation had been on the rise and the common man was suffering under an economist PM. “The government keeps saying petroleum companies are suffering. But balance sheets of the oil companies show they have been making huge profits. We will demand an official statement on the issue,” he said.

Prasad said since one or the other Congress leader kept saying Rahul Gandhi should be made the PM,“he should be given a chance”. “Let the country see if he has the talent and potential to run a country like India. The arrogance of the Congress is similar to what the party had shown when Emergency was imposed in 1975,” he said.
