A few months back,Union Home Minister P Chidambarams displeasure with the acronym CoBRA for CRPFs specialized Commando Battalion for Resolute Action had changed the forces name to Special Action Force (SAF). Now,the somewhat demoralized CRPF has decided to once again revert to the name CoBRA for the special force.
The CRPF has recently come out with new directions which stipulate that only the nomenclature CoBRA be used instead of the SAF while referring to the special force. Having examined the change in nomenclature, the CRPF has said that there is no ambiguity in the government orders /sanction and the approved nomenclature of the special force is CoBRA.
Asked about changing the name of the force back to CoBRA,CRPFs IG (CoBRA) Ashutosh Shukla said,As far as we know, the name was never officially changed. The SAF was never made the name. We are continuing with the name CoBRA.
While presenting the monthly report card of his ministry in March this year,Home Minister P Chidambaram had first referred to the force as SAF. He had also told The Indian Express at that time that he was not quite comfortable with the fact that a specialized strike force had been given an animal-like name and that a name like the Special Action Force appeared more apt.
