The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the recruitment scam at the National Defence Academy (NDA) revealed on Saturday that Colonel A K Singh, the presiding officer for recruitment at NDA,had used a SIM card during the alleged scam exclusively to be in touch with the other accused and the candidates chosen to be favoured in lieu of money.
CBI special prosecutor Vivek Saxena revealed this while seeking custody of Col Singh for eight more days for further investigations. Col Singh had stopped using the said SIM card from June 23,when NDA and other places were searched in connection with the scam, the CBI said.
It was also revealed that the total money, allegedly paid as bribe,to be recovered from Col Singh is Rs 74.5 lakh, revised from Rs 52 lakh after it came to light that Col Kulbir Singh (now in judicial custody) and some others had handed over an additional Rs 22.5 lakh to Col AK Singh. It is believed that one person paid Rs 30 lakh for recruitment of 12 candidates, and that Singh had demanded Rs 2.5 lakh per candidate from another person to ensure selection of candidates through this examination.
It is also revealed that Col A K Singh increased the marks of one candidate from 52 to 62 and another from 36 to 46. Candidates who had qualified were deliberately disqualified and vice versa, Saxena argued in court.

The laptop allegedly used by Singh to maintain records of candidates was found from a relative of Singhs clerk on Friday. However, the records of candidates allegedly favoured by Singh have been deleted. The CBI was also looking for a pen drive that Singh is believed to have used to store the said records. However,a pen drive provided by Singh to CBI did not contain the required information.
The CBI wants to search for the pen drive having these details, Saxena told the court seeking an extension of his custody.
Singhs counsel senior advocate S K Jain opposed further CBI custody arguing Singhs presence was not needed for further investigation.
CBI special judge D R Mahajan extended Singhs CBI custody till July 11.
The CBI submitted its objection to bail pleas filed by four others in the case,Colonel Kulbir Singh, staff officer to the NDA commandant,Balkrishna Kanojia,Vishnu Prasad Sharma and Ramesh Gaikwad. Arguments on their bail application will be heard by court on July 12.
