A trooper of the CRPFs anti-Maoist task force,Commando Batallion for Resolute Action (CoBRA),was killed and seven critically injured in a landmine blast at Jampani village in Jhalda in Bengals Purulia Saturday morning.
Following intelligence inputs,a CoBRA team was sent to Jampani Friday night. At around 6.15 am,just outside the village, the men were struck by an IED blast, injuring seven of them. One of the injured,Bishram Kumar,a resident of Siwan in Bihar, succumbed to his wounds a few hours later. Four were airlifted to a Kolkata hospital, where Kalu Ram and M R Swain are battling for life.
CRPF officials believe the men were led into a trap. We have little strength of CoBRA jawans in the state. They are not sent for an operation if we do not receive specific and authentic intelligence. But in this case,it seems, there was a booby trap and the jawans were ambushed, said an official, who did not want to be named.
The attack is believed to be the handiwork of a Maoist squad led by Bikram alias Arnab Dam.
