Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on forward Indian positions along the Line of Control (LoC),injuring a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on Monday afternoon.

This has been the 12th ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops and a second casualty on the Indian side this year.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian positions along the LoC in Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district around noon, injuring BSF personnel P K Mishra. He was immediately rushed to the military command hospital in Udhampur. The Indian side too retaliated and the firing continued for nearly half an hour.

Ever since the announcement of Amarnath Yatra dates and beginning of summer season, there has been an abrupt increase in ceasefire violation incidents and infiltration attempts from across the border. Senior Army officials, who did not wish to be named, attributed these to desperation of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and also the militant outfits to push in their men to this side of the border so as to step up the level of violence in the Valley.
