A RECENT SURVEY conducted amongst 5,098 respondents by online travel portal Yatra.com reveals that 66 per cent of respondents are planning to travel during the festival season, taking advantage of the long weekends over Diwali and Dussehra. Out of the total respondents, 8 per cent are Puneites and 12 per cent are from Mumbai. Other metros participating in the survey included Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The hill stations and Goa have been highlighted as top choices amongst domestic destinations, and Europe and Thailand top the list of most favored international locations. One of the key findings of the survey is an emerging trend of luxury travel. The rupee’s stability has allowed 22.6 per cent of travelers to increase their spending capacity above Rs. 50,000 per person on travel. Though most travelers are spending time and money planning an international vacation, many are also embarking on domestic travel for shorter trips which are considerably more affordable.

City-based Akshay Ingle celebrates Diwali with his parents every year. This year, however, he plans to go to Goa with four of his friends. “It is impossible to find a place in Goa during Christmas and New Year. Besides, it becomes too crowded to be enjoyable. Hence, me and my friends decided to go this Diwali,” said Ingle.

Commenting on the findings from the survey, Sharat Dhall, President, Yatra.com says, “With Durga Puja, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali on the horizon, we have observed an increase in leisure travel, reflected by improvement in passenger loads on flights to beach and hill destinations. With respect to international travel, the stability of the rupee has provided an impetus for travellers to plan trips abroad.”
