You totally can! (Source: National Geographic/Twitter)

What goes into making of a toothpaste? That minty paste that ensures you have a perfect set of pearly whites… Materials  such as rocks, crushed bones and egg shells, pumice etc. Has that got you intrigued?

Well, although now there are high-tech ingredients that make up the toothpaste you use, but they’re apparently not that different from the older ones used ages ago. In a video shared by the National Geographic Channel, a chemist shows us how to make toothpaste at home, using just the kind of peculiar ingredients we mentioned earlier.

He starts off by talking about abrasives, that clean the plaque off the teeth. These constitute a major part of the paste, that is, anywhere between 30 and 60 per cent. What is even surprising is that these constituents are basically the main element in a sandpaper, pumice and bones, etc. He then talks about humectants that are water retainers, sweeteners that give the sweet taste to the paste, and then the artificial flavours, foaming agents and thickeners — all made of ingredients that you probably did not think of in your wildest dreams (read red seaweed)!

If all this information about the many toothpaste ingredients has not grossed you out, then the good news is, you can make your own, using only natural ingredients. And the chemist uses – chalk (!), xylitol, peppermint oil, glycerin and other plant products, to make an absolutely healthy and organic toothpaste.
