7 more reasons to have mangoes

The golden fruit is not only delicious, but it is also full of vitamins and beta carotenes. So, don’t stop gorging on them.

Our markets are full of mangoes of all kinds, from Alphonso to Banganapalli, and, as usual, nobody can resist them. But did you know that apart from being an incredibly edible fruit, they are also full of nutrients? We take a look at the health benefits of mangoes.

* We all know mangoes are full of goodness, and you are probably aware that mangoes contain a lot of vitamin C. But this delicious fruit is also a storehouse of other vitamins such as B6, as well as potassium, copper and magnesium.

* On a warm summer evening, when you feel like something light, a mango or two can make for a great dinner. Since, mangoes are fibrous they help with digestion, and work against constipation as well.

* Since mangoes are also rich in iron, they are also helpful in the fight against anemia. A mango a day is actually a good way to show anemia the door.

* A lot of people believe that mangoes contribute to weight gain. But, apparently, while a cup of mango has more calories than, say, a papaya or a musk melon, the fat content in a mango is just about 0.6 percent. So, having a mango or a couple a day is quite okay, but, if you’re watching your weight, do keep away from desserts involving mangoes, of course.

* According to the book Miracle Juice: 60 Juices for a Healthy Life, mangoes contain carotenes, and help in keeping blood pressure under check, and make for great immune boosters to fight infections.

* A lot of people eat mangoes along with the peel, and besides being intensely fibrous, more than the meat, peels are known to be more nutritious than the flesh of the fruit. So, don’t simply discard the peel. Eat it!

* So, mangoes are full of vitamins, but specifically how do they help you? Well, let’s take Vitamin C. Vitamin C is good for, among others, immune function. Vitamin A is good for your eyes and skin, among others.
