The nine-day auspicious festival of Navratri celebrated in the honor of the many forms of Goddess Durga, is one of the most vibrant festivals celebrated in different ways in different parts of the nation.
While most people observe fasts to pay respect to the three forms of the Goddess—Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, here is a comprehensive day-wise guide by an astrologer, numerologist, palmist and vaastu expert Jai Madaan to welcome prosperity in your life during this auspicious period that is celebrated with a lot of vigor and zeal.
Day 1 – Pratipada – October 2, 2016
Maa Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri, who is known as the daughter of the mountains. She brings peace and harmony in the house and her idol is dressed in bright grey.

Quick Tip- Keeping the idol and kalash (copper or earthen) in the house helps bring positivity and harmony in life.
Day 2 – Dwitiya – October 3, 2016
On the second day of Navratri, devotees worship Maa Bharmacharini, who means ‘one who constantly meditates on the Supreme Being’. This form of Goddess is highly auspicious as it is a peaceful form in meditation and as per the a mythological story, this goddess embodies the elegant forms with power, divine and spiritual grace.

Quick Tip- The akhand jyoti, which is burned continuously for the nine days of Navratri, must be kept in the ‘agnaye kon’ (south-east) part of the house.
Day 3 – Tritiya – October 4, 2016
On the third day, devotees worship goddess Chandraghanta, known to spread peace, serenity, beauty and bravery in one’s life. The Goddess is dressed in white color and her devotees should wear red color clothes to bring prosperity.

Quick Tip- Take an earthen clay pitcher (‘Matkaa’), fill it with clean water and put some rose petals, one silver coin and one penny in it; then cover it with clay pot lid and tie a ‘Raksha’ thread (‘Moli’/’Kalavaa’) around the neck of this earthen pot to welcome her positive energies in your life.
Day 4 – Chaturthi – October 5, 2016
Goddess Kushmanda is the fourth form of the goddess worshipped on the fourth day of Navratri. She is considered as the creator of the entire universe and her idol is draped in a red saree.

Quick Tip- The curtains used in home should be in light shades of white, mauve or green to bring in wealth.
Day 5 – Panchami – October 6, 2016
Goddess Skandamata is the avatar of Maa Durga who is worshipped on the fifth day and is known to demolish the demons. Upang Lalitha Gauri Vrata is observed on this day to honor the goddess dressed in a yellow saree.
Quick Tip- Feed one blind or poor person on this day to bring prosperity.
Day 6 – Shashti – October 7, 2016
On the sixth day of Navratri, Maha Shashti is celebrated and Goddess Katyayani, dressed in a green saree, is worshiped.

Quick Tip- Decorate the main or entrance door of your home distinctively to enable prosperity and wealth to make its way to your humble abode. Keep this area brightly lit and beautifully colored.
Day 7 – Saptami – October 8, 2016
Goddess Kaalratri is the seventh form of Goddess Durga and is known to protect all her devotees from trouble and negative powers. It is the beginning of Maha Saptami and Utsava Puja is performed as the goddess is believed to bless her devotees with freedom and happiness. The goddess is adorned with a Peacock Green colored saree to welcome the auspicious energies.

Quick Tip- Feed water and grains to birds in your plot’s yard, this attracts positive energy and wealth.
Day 8 – Ashtami – October 9, 2016
On the eighth day, Goddess Maha Gauri, who is known to forgive the sins of her devotees and help them get purified, is worshipped. The goddess is dressed in Purple color on Durga Ashtami and Saraswati Mata Puja is conducted.
Quick Tip- Keep a purple colored plant in your home. If you find it difficult to get a purple colored plant, then keep a money plant in a purple colored pot to bring wealth and prosperity
Day 9 & 10- October 10, 2016
On the ninth day, Goddess Siddhidatri, who is the last form of Maa Durga and who is known to have great supernatural powers, is worshipped. She is known to provide knowledge to her devotees. The goddess is dressed in purple attire and Maha Navami puja and Kanya puja is performed on this auspicious day.

Quick Tip- Keep a fish aquarium in your home in the North-East portion of the hall or living room. Always keep the fish aquarium clean and aerated.
