Twelve people were killed and 26 others feared trapped in debris after a cloud burst triggered a massive landslide in the district.

At least seven houses were washed away, trapping 38 people, following heavy rains in Lar and Jhegla villages in Mushiyari block, official sources said.

Rescue and medical teams were rushed to the spot but the operation to clear the debris was hampered due to inclement weather and bad light. Personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police were also helping in the rescue work.

Chief Minister Ramesh Pokriyal, who left for the district, said relief work was in full swing. Opposition Congress leader Yashpal Arya expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident.
