WITH RAHUL Gandhi set to visit Himachal Pradesh on December 23-24, his first after the Congress lost all four Lok Sabha seats in the state in 2014, Congressmen have every reason to bury the hatchet and put up a united front.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who was in Una for an official function, flew back to attend a PCC meeting convened by state Congress president Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and briefed party leaders about the mega show the government would host in Dharamshala to mark its four years in power.

This perhaps will be Rahul’s first rally in any state after the Parliament logjam and the AICC vice-president has threatened to reveal Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘personal corruption’ , feel Congress leaders.

Before the rally, PCC chief Sukhu himself set out the agenda, alleging that the Prime Minister had selectively leaked the demonetisation drive to the BJP state unit. The party, he alleged, had negotiated deals for purchase of land for its offices in Shimla and Bilaspur. “I have asked the chief minister to order a probe and take action if the reports are true. To our information, they had struck a deal before demonetisation,” said Sukhu.

Rahul will reach Dharamshala a day before the December 24 rally and may halt at night. Next day, the Congress will hold a rally to highlight its achievements in four years. The rally is proposed to be held at the police ground, said Sudhir Sharma, minister and Dharamshala MLA, who has been made in-charge of the show that will be funded by the state government.

Initially, when Rahul expressed his inability to reach on December 25 — the date when the government completes four years – the CM advanced the rally to December 24. He had even camped in Delhi for two days to meet him and get his nod.

The BJP, which had convened a meeting of the chargesheet committee formed to pin the government on corruption, has advanced its meeting to December 17 from December 18.

Former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal: “Rahul Gandhi’s visit will not make any impact as Virbhadra Singh is already on his way out. The elections next year will see the exit of the Congress regime,” he added, predicting the BJP’s return to power. “The corrupt Congress regime is already packing its bags. Rahul Gandhi will not have any relevance here,” he added.
