Unable to take the pressure of high expectations, seven students of IIT Kanpur committed suicide in the past four years, the latest being G Suman who took the extreme step after failing to get a job.

Director of IIT Kanpur Sanjay Govind Dhande said the inability to get selected during a campus recruitment despite being a promising student drove Suman,an M-tech student of electrical engineering from Andhra Pradesh,to take the drastic step.

Dhande said that students get depressed after they are unable to meet expectations. They get stressed and crack under pressure of studies.

“Mental tension and stress has been the key reason behind the suicides committed by the seven students in the last four years,” he said.
