The Chandigarh Police have arrested prominent city-based social worker and theatre artiste, Zulfiqar Khan, for allegedly sodomising minors who were part of the NGO he had set up for underprivileged children. Khan ran NGO Theatre Age that he had formed in 1992.
Inspector General of Police (UT) R P Upadhyay confirmed that personnel from the Sector 11 police station had arrested Khan. According to police, Khan has been booked under section 377 (unnatural offences) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) besides relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He will be produced before a local court on Sunday.
A senior police official said the matter came to light after a group of minor boys, studying at NGO Theatre Age, handed in a complaint to the UT child rights commission. The victims have allegedly submitted photographs along with the complaint. The commission then contacted the police, who registered a case against Khan Saturday evening.
A member of the child rights body said a full bench of the commission was convened on July 7 to hear the accounts of the children. After a discussion on Wednesday, the matter was handed over to the UT SSP for investigation.
