Senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur Saturday filed a complaint with the police requesting to lodge an FIR against Mulayam Singh Yadav, alleging that the Samajwadi Party chief threatened him with dire consequences if he does not mend his ways.

Thakur, an IG rank officer, who had Friday released an audio tape purportedly containing Mulayam’s voice, also wrote to Union Home Secretary seeking security cover for himself and his family. He also wrote to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan with a similar request and has marked a copy of the letter to DGP Jagmohan Yadav.

In the audio clip, which is just over two minutes long, the voice, purportedly of Mulayam, tells Thakur: “Ab aap sudhar jaiye, itta he keh diya maine (now you must mend your ways, I’ve told you as much)”.

Thakur, and his wife and RTI activist Nutan Thakur, Saturday claimed that initially officials at Hazratganj police station refused to register the complaint.

“He (Thakur) submitted a complaint for an FIR under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, against Mulayam Singh Yadav, However, SHO Vijay Pal Singh Yadav, initially refused to receive the complaint. When my husband said that he will keep sitting there, the official took his complaint,” Nutan said.

The IPS officer said he was made to wait half-an-hour. “Apparently, seeing the media persons, the complaint was received and I was told that action will be taken after investigation,” Thakur told The Indian Express.

Thakur, IG Civil Defence, had Friday said that he had received a call at 4.43pm in which the caller referred to “incident” at Jasrana and how he had “saved” the office then. The caller is heard saying, “Humne bachaya tumhe pitne se, sab maarna chahte the (I saved you from being beaten up, everyone wanted to thrash you),” the caller is heard saying in the clip.

Nutan claimed that the caller was Mulayam and he was referring to an incident that took place in 2006 when her husband, who was then Fiorozabad SP, was attacked by Samajwadi Party’s Jasrana MLA Ramveer. “Mulayam was chief minister. After several witnesses to the incident backtracked, Ramveer and others were acquitted for lack of evidence,” Nutan said.

In the police complaint, Thakur has said that the telephone number from which he got the call matches the number listed against Mulayam in the (official) Information Diary (which is issued by the state Information Department). “Also, I know his voice very well. It was indeed his voice. Additionally, he recalled meeting my father-in-law in Patna, which no one else could discuss,” Thakur claimed.

“From what I could understand, Mulayam was unhappy about the recent FIR lodged on a complaint by my wife Nutan against Minister for Mining Gayatri Prasad Prajapati at Hazratganj police station under sections 467, 468, 471 420, 203, 120 B of the IPC,” said the IPS officer, who, along with his wife, are known to take up social causes.

Amitabh has also mentioned in his complaint that Mulayam is “supremo of a big political party, is very powerful, and is said to wield considerable influence. Hence, if he is unhappy with me and has threatened me, then this cannot be taken lightly. The responsibility (to take action) is primarily yours, even if it isn’t entirely in your control”.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Lucknow, Rajesh Pandey said the matter will be probed to find out the genuineness of the audio tape released by Thakur.

While Mulayam was not immediately available for comments, senior SP leader dismissed the audio clip as “doctored.”
