JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Bihar Chief Minister on Sunday. Nitish has retained the same team of ministers as his predecessor Jitan Ram Manjhi except the ones who sided with the Dalit leader. Twenty two ministers were sworn in with Nitish, who has left 13 positions vacant for RJD and Congress MLAs who might join the government after the March 11 trust vote.

‘Janata Parivar’ leaders H D Deve Gowda, Abhay Chautala, Dushyant Chautala and Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav attended the function. So did West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and her Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi.

Though several RJD leaders were present, Lalu Prasad could not make it to the function because of being preoccupied with his daughter’s marriage. Similarly, Mulayam Singh Yadav sent Akhilesh to represent the Samajwadi Party.

The presence of Banerjee and Gogoi at the ceremony, besides ‘Janata Parivar’ leaders, has triggered off speculation that with his power restored, Nitish will now look to forge an alliance of eastern states to mount pressure on the Centre.
JD (U) national spokesperson KC Tyagi told The Indian Express: “Once we form the Janata Parivar and the eastern front, we will have broader alliance on several common issues. We are also trying to get Naveen Patnaik into the fold”. Former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi and BJP legislature party leader Sushil Kumar Modi were also present at the ceremony.

Nitish has continued with the caste and region balance and has not dropped any minister except those who rebelled against him and were suspended from the party. Three women ministers — Ranju Gita, Bima Bharti and Lesi Singh — were re-inducted. So were two Muslim leaders — Javed Iqbal Ansari and Naushad Alam. Prashant Kumar Shahi and Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh —who were dismissed by Manjhi – also returned.
