Govt using census data to polarise Bihar before polls

The Congress too saw a Bihar connect as it accused the government of trying to project the data only to show that the Muslim population was increasing, while the Hindu population was on the decline.

Attacking the NDA government for releasing census data with regard to the population of religious communities, the JD(U) and Congress claimed Wednesday that the move was intended to create a religious polarisation in the run-up to Bihar Assembly elections. “This is nothing except an attempt at a religious polarisation… it will only disturb communal harmony,” said JD(U) leader K C Tyagi.

The Congress too saw a Bihar connect as it accused the government of trying to project the data only to show that the Muslim population was increasing, while the Hindu population was on the decline.

AICC general secretary Shakeel Ahmad said: “The government, on the eve of the Bihar polls, wants to hoodwink the people. The government wants to twist the data and project it in a way that it is far away from reality.”

Ahmad claimed that the timing of the census data’s release was calculated to polarise. “Already the Sangh Parivar is at it. I have heard some inflammatory speeches,” he said.

While attacking the government, JD(U)’s KC Tyagi said the purpose of conducting the census was to collect data for formulation of schemes for people’s welfare and not to create a communal divide.

“This act of the government is somewhere against the welfare of backward classes, the scheduled castes and the scheduled tribes in the backdrop of coming Assembly polls in Bihar and the current Patidar agitation in Gujarat,” added the JD(U) leader.
